Tree Reflections

A little back story and step by step for creating this image.

I ordered two prints from Smallwoods. I discovered Smallwoods through a client after seeing large prints from their engagement session hanging in their home. I was happy with the prints, but they didn’t fit the space right. I wanted to add two more.

I looked through my images and found a third that would go well but needed to create a fourth. I wanted it to be combined with an oil pastel panting, similar to the Marsh one. I picked a few images to start working with, ones with trees, water and importantly ones that had a similar emotional tone, and an oil pastel image.

I used a sculpting medium on cardstock before adding oil pastels on this one to give it more texture.

I tried this combination a few times.

I liked the shape of the second try, I was getting closer. A micro lesson in knowing when to keep trying at something and when to let it go and move on. I decided to let go of the oil pastel and try something different, a cold wax painting.

Third time was, in fact, the charm. Here’s the step by step:

I cropped the first image to the orientation I needed, flipped the image horizontally, and layered with the second image to show the rocks through the water.
Cropped the image.
Layered the cold wax painting, lighten blending mode.
Final adjustments in Lightroom to brightness, color, clarity and contrast.
Final set
