Self-reflection
.
I’ve tried several times to use this mirror in my work and this is the first one I really like.
I was back and forth between keeping the eye visible or obscured. The obscured outward vision speaks more to inward looking. Or I suppose it could also be the avoidance of looking at what is in front of you. But the internalized mirrors from the background image lean in to some kind of internalized viewing. That’s my initial take anyway.

Also, the eye gaze in this portrait is so powerful. Hence my back and forth about whether to show or obscure. But maybe our power does not always need to be on display for everyone. Sometimes we stand in that power without anyone observing.

Inspired by artwork that crossed my path (shared in stories)

When I was taking some portraits for this, two stood out to me. The first one I made was closer to a literal interpretation of the original inspiration. Wanting to expand on the idea, I flipped the portrait of me on its side. And it’s just so cool to me how different the two are. To me, it reads ‘look what happens when you adjust your perspective’ or ‘after all that work, she was able to breathe’.

I didn’t intend to create a wall. But now that it’s up, I’m not sure which I prefer. Either way, it’s food for thought.

Mothers and Daughters

They were not the subject of my photography work today. But I saw them across the room and was immediately drawn to the way my friend was playing with her daughter’s hair. It’s what led me to point the camera in their direction. I know this story so well. One about care, comfort, bonding, and protection. It’s all the things her and I talk about together as moms. The work always in progress, trying to stay both aware and connected.
